“To hell with reality! I want to die in music, not in reason or in prose.

People don't deserve the restraint we show by not going into

delirium in front of them. To hell with them!”

— Louis-Ferdinand Céline

Born in Mexico City, Víctor Báez is an internationally active composer whose work encompasses chamber, orchestral, vocal, electroacoustic, multimedia, film, and interdisciplinary practices.

His work has been commissioned and performed by leading contemporary music ensembles and performers including Mivos Quartet, Yarn/Wire, Ekmeles, Quasars Ensemble, Ian Pace, Alice Teyssier, Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, and InnStrumenti Kammerorchester, with activity across Austria, the United States, Mexico, Germany, Russia and the Czech Republic, among others.

His compositional style focuses on the spiritual narrative of sound as conveyed by the internal logic of musical discourse. Using the score as a meeting point between raw expression and intellectual rigour, his music is characterised by a gestural intensity articulated through immersive, compelling, and dynamic soundscapes.

His artistic practice is closely integrated with composition pedagogy and artistic-academic leadership. From 2014 to 2019, he served as Adjunct Teaching Fellow at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. He is the founder of Iceberg Institute and founder and artistic director of Sounds of Now Vienna, a contemporary music festival and composition workshop based at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw Wien) since 2024.

Among his many distinctions, he has been Composer-in-Residence at Avaloch Farm Music Institute, won the 2020 Tesselat Call for Scores in both available categories, the 2017 Bilder im Kopf competition at Wien Modern, a Fulbright Scholarship, a Fonca-CONACYT Scholarship from the Mexican National Arts and Culture Fund, and the Austrian START Scholarship for Music. His works are published by Donemus Publishing and can be heard on the Sono Luminus label.
